I finally made it to Beppu’s famous hot springs, known as Jigoku. At first, I thought the name was simply created to attract tourists. But I was completely wrong.
Long ago, these steaming hot springs were so hot that crops couldn’t grow, and people couldn’t live nearby. The boiling water, rising steam, and unusual colors made the area feel like a real hell. That’s why people began calling it “Jigoku,” the Japanese word for “hell.” It wasn’t a marketing slogan. It was a name born from people’s real experience.
Standing there, surrounded by bright red and deep blue hot springs, I understood why the name has survived for centuries. Beppu’s Jigoku isn’t just a tourist attraction. It’s a place where I truly felt the immense power and mystery of our planet.
「地獄めぐり」（大分県別府市）という名前を聞いたとき、最初は観光客を惹きつけるためのインパクトのあるネーミングだと思っていました。
でも実際は、昔は熱すぎて作物も育たず、人も近づけない場所だったそうです。吹き上がる蒸気や、赤や青に染まる熱湯を目の前にすると、「本当に地獄のような場所」と呼ばれた理由がよく分かりました。
人々の実感から生まれた名前だからこそ、何百年もの間受け継がれてきたのかもしれません。
実際に訪れてみると、「地獄」という名前に負けない迫力があり、地球が今も生きていることを感じさせてくれる、とても神秘的な場所でした。
