Not Conquering Nature, but Living with It

When I visited Nikobuchi in Kochi Prefecture, I expected to be impressed by the famous Niyodo Blue. And I was. The water was unbelievably clear.

But what impressed me even more was something else.

I realized that beautiful places do not become great tourist destinations through nature alone. People make them accessible, safe, and unforgettable.

The steep stairs carved into the mountainside. The bamboo fountains that blend naturally into the scenery. The signs that quietly guide visitors to the perfect viewpoint. Every detail has been carefully designed.

The local people built all of this without destroying the beauty of nature. That made me appreciate this place even more.

Then I started learning about the history of the Niyodo River.

For centuries, this river has shaped the lives of the people who lived here. Long ago, more than 1,000 years ago, the river was feared. During heavy rain, it often caused devastating floods. People respected its power and worshipped gods along the river.

During the Edo period, a few hundred years ago, people began to live with the river instead of simply fearing it. A local official built a network of irrigation canals. These projects reduced flood damage and brought water to dry farmland, turning it into productive rice fields.

Even today, the Niyodo River teaches the same lesson. Many submersible bridges still cross the river. These bridges have no handrails. When the river floods, they simply disappear beneath the water. Instead of resisting nature, they allow the river to flow over them. It is a simple but brilliant design.

Looking back, I realized that every generation has faced the same challenge. The Edo-period irrigation canals. The submersible bridges. All of them are solutions to the same problem.

The people here never tried to conquer nature. Instead, they found ways to live with it.

Behind the beautiful blue water is a much deeper story.

It is the story of people adapting to nature with creativity and wisdom, generation after generation.
